[Searching for:] Mood plugin for 2.0
« on: Aug 14, 2011, 07:09:40 »
Hey,

If this is a wrong section for this topic, a mod can kindly move to the appropriate section otherwise.

So from these two example sites:
http://board.rnbspot.in/showthread.php?2042-XXL-Stocks&s=387898f63560c33779f4cf867772fc66

&

http://www.shadygamer.com/threads/official-event-coding-contest.3112/page-2

Under each user's avatar, there is an icon/image that represents that person's mood.   I have a feeling that maybe some users in DzinerStudio have got a plugin or I am hoping someone can help find out if such plugin exists ? .

(I wouldn't know what correct keyword to use at SMF mod site  :-[ )

Those seem to be examples of a mood mod. Unfortunately None of the mood mods available for SMF have been updated in quite some time.

Hey ARG,

Thanks for you input , it sucks to hear that those mods are majorly for SMF 1.x.x branch and yes they look very old. How can the SMF community not develop or convert mood plugins of (VB/IPB etc) version into SMF 2.0 ? :(

Oh well that was worth trying , hopefully it will happen inthe near future :)

Old mods are the legal property of their authors, unless someone has permission to take them over and update them, any mod that does the same thing must be a fresh-from-scratch development.

Add to that that SMF 2.0 spent several years in development, and most of the authors of 1.x mods have long since moved on to other things, so they're not around to give their permission - and that most of the really good mod authors did pretty much the same a while back, it's not like there are many people left who could really make magic with modding to build such things, and it doesn't help that the community isn't exactly that nice to modders (always wanting more, and expecting the modder to provide support pretty much forever, etc.)

This is why I stopped writing mods for SMF.

The sad part is that it isn't even that hard to do with a little ingenuity, and could even be done in a way that didn't really affect performance and with only a single template edit, but even that would trigger an awful lot of support hassle.

Wow i don't know how to respond to your reply,  what you have said now seems to make a lot of sense though. I can see that SMF isn't what it used to be from a long while back.

I noticed that when i converted from 1.x.x to the 2.x branch some of my favourite  1.x.x mods where no longer updated for 2.0 , so i spent a lot of time trying to find other mods or alternative solutions.

I kind of hoped those 1.x.x "mood plugins" could be converted to 2.0 versions if the SMF community gives the author demands for it , well i guess some author may not want that if they have already moved on to new things.

I too would love for a mod like this to come to SMF, most if not all of the other big software either have moods in built or a mod for the latest version

Unfortunately it's the sad truth, SMF is an awesome forum software but very few are choosing to use it anymore, and all the original coders are moving onto other software? And very few of the original great mods are being ported over!

This is primarily why I have decided to change my forum software and will be launching the new site in a few weeks! I'm just waiting for DZ to start the ing for it lol ;)

Either way I wish you all the best, and if you get on the right side and are prepared to pay there are still plenty of coders on the SMF forums that will be able to port mods over! I have had some great experiences from the SMF coders and there all very helpful...

It's a bloody shame it's just not got the following it did back when it was on version 1.0

The original coders themselves moved on a long time. That happens in any project, where people just find it's their time to move on. The problem isn't that it happened, it's that who came next didn't manage to regain the momentum that the original had.

I'm curious as to which software you're moving to.

Yes, even if it isn't strictly above board. It certainly isn't that hard if you're a competent coder.

Some of the people there are really, really good. I think it's fair to say though that you do get what you pay for, and that some people are out for anything and everything they can get.

1.0 and 1.1 had decent momentum. The turmoil through pretty much the entire 2.0 dev cycle however was not so helpful.

Fortunately there are some people out there who are doing something about it in their own inimitable way.

I am sticking with SMF merely to continue with DS theme support and design jobs. My regular sites will all soon be updated with either Wordpress or Joomla along with XenForo forums, at least until we see a release of something else that may suffice.
